Half Life places the 7900 GS in a position of where it is neck to neck with the X1800 GTO2 in terms of performance. It has secondary performance in all but one benchmark. The reason for the 7900 GS’ lower performance is analogous to why ATI cards tend to perform worse on the Doom 3 engine. It is commonly known that the Half Life engine tends to traditionally favor Radeon GPUs.
