Best Buy Lawyer Falsifies Docs

Timothy Block, a lawyer for Best Buy, has admitted to falsifying documents for Best Buy in a lawsuit filed against the company. Block admitted to altering emails along with a memo before handing the items over to plaintiffs.
The lawsuit was originally filed against Best Buy by Samuel Kim in 2003. It accuses Best Buy and Microsoft of running a scam in which Best Buy signed up customers for MSN Internet access without their consent between 1999 and 2003. Ultimately, the credit cards of Best Buy customers were charged for services they never signed up for. Kim accuses Best Buy and Microsoft of working together on this scam, and says that Best Buy received a cut for each person it registered with the service. The scam is said to have affected 100,000 people.
Best Buy has had past history of not cooperating with courts in handing over papers. Timothy Block's law firm has requested to be removed from the case, the judge will rule June 22 whether to allow them to withdraw. |

According to EE Times, AMD, Micron, and Lexmark are all considering to go private. The rumors surface after a horrible thrid quarter performance from AMD and analyst reports that the company will run out of cash within two quarters.
Last quarter, AMD lost $883 million in free clash flow. The figure turned out to be much worse than originally expected and took the company by surprise.
In addition to severe financial troubles, Intel has been relentlessly pursuing AMD. Intel gained back 4.5 percent marketshare in the microprocessor market last quarter, and now controls 80.2% of the total processor market. |

Intel and ASUS Announce Low-Cost PC
06/05/2007 12:54:20 PM CST

Intel announced today that it is working with ASUS to develop low-cost portable PCs. This project is not to be confused with Intel's Classmate PC, which as far as we know is a completely separate venture. There is no specific target price for these notebooks, however, Intel said that some might be available for less than $200.
The first Intel-ASUS laptop was announced at the end of a keynote address at Computex. Jonney Shih, CEO and chairman of ASUS, walked onto the stage with a prototype of the low-cost notebook PC. The PC itself is very small, and measures in at only 225 x 165 x 35mm. It weighs only 890 grams.
It is difficult to pinpoint exactly what market segment this PC is targeted at. Intel and ASUS both claim that it is designed for developing countries, but where that would leave Intel's Classmate PC is beyond our knowledge. There have been some discussion that ASUS will be offering the PC through traditional retail channely, meaning a government contract wouldn't be the only way to get this PC.he laptop series has been dubbed the Eee, which according to ASUS stands for, "easy to learn, easy to play, easy to work." Although we might not like the name very much, the price point should make u for it.

As can be expected, the laptop is based on an Intel chipset and CPU. The notebook is more flexible in terms of operating systems compared to Intel's Classmate PC, and similar to the XO, is based on a distribution of Linux. Intel and ASUS, however, opted against making a specialized Linux distribution and instead chose to base the laptop on the well-known Linux distribution Ubuntu. In addition to compatiblity with Linux, we are being told the laptops will also be compatible with Microsoft's operating systems.
The notebook's monitor has a 7-inch diagonal length. Unfortunately, ASUS didn't go as far as to reveal the resolution of the display. In terms of storage, the notebook can be equipped with NAND memory modules ranging from 2 GB all the way to 16 GB. As of right now, the price point of the laptop is expected to be around $199. Naturally, the price will go up depending on the laptop's hardware configuration. T |

Joost Appoints New CEO

Joost today announced that it has appointed Mike Volpi as its new chief executive officer. Volpi will replace founding CEO Fredrik de Wahl, who will remain at Joost as chief strategy officer. The change in positions is effective immediately.
“Mike brings unparalleled leadership and technology expertise that will enable us to accelerate the growth of the company,” said former Joost CEO de Wahl. “I am excited to work with Mike, both because he is an exceptional leader and strategist, and because we share a common ambition for Joost.”
Prior to joining Joost, Volpi worked in various strategic marketing roles at Cisco for 13 years. During his time at Cisco, he took part in the acquisition of more than 70 companies. In his most recent role at Cisco Volpi served as senior vice president and general manager for Cisco’s Routing and Service Provider Technology Group, through which he directly managed an $11 billion business.
Joost has garnered significant corporate and user attention since it launched its beta program. Currently, CBS, Viacom, and Warner Brothers have all signed content partnerships with the company. Although the official launch date of the program is still unannounced, the Beta program is in its final stages, and the recent change in corporate leadership might indicate that Joost is gearing up for its debut.

Dual Radeon HD 2600 XT from HIS

HIS is demonstrating a dual-GPU Radeon HD 2600 XT at Computex 2007. Although this card might never actually make it to to market, it is still an interesting show of technology by HIS. The card features a total of 120 stream processors and 1 GB of memory.
No further information is being given out by HIS at the moment. After repeated questioning by our team, however, we were able to find out that the GPUs run at 700 MHz in place of the standard 800 MHz. In addition, we were told that although commercial plans are not completely carved in stone, we might see a product based on this card released towards the end of the year.

Intel Classmate PC at Computex
06/05/2007 10:50:33 AM CST
A working model of Intel's classmate PC is on display at Sandisk's stand in Comutex. Intel's Classmate PC holds a stark similarity to MIT's One Laptop For Child XO laptop. The Intel Classmate and XO are fundamentally different from one another despite targeting the same market. While the Intel Classmate attempts to stay true to traditional notebook PCs, the XO takes a rather unconventional approach.
The OLPC organization is headed by Nicholas Negroponte, who has been quite critical of Intel's Classmate PC on a number of occasions. He feels that Intel's low-cost laptop is much more "teacher-centric",
while the XO is much more "child-centric." In addition, he feels that XO has an inherent advantage because it was not created for pure profit. Despite this,
the OLPC organization has still faced criticism in the past.

Returning to the Intel Classmate PC, the laptop comes pre-installed with Windows XP Professional. Given that Intel has so much involvement in the design of the PC, it is no surprise that it comes equipped with an Intel Celeron M processor. Special attention has been given to the storage of the notebook, and it features 2 GB of NAND flash memory. The memory can be expanded through USB ports.

The memory modules are obviously supplied by Sandisk, given that the Classmate PC is on display at its booth. The Classmate PC seems much more similar to
traditional notebooks than its competitor, XO. Screen brightness is also quite similar to traditional notebook PCs. |

Ballmer: No Zune for Europe Just Yet
06/04/2007 8:47:41 AM CST
In an interview with German newspaper Wirtschafts Woche Steve Ballmer declared that the time is still not right for Microsoft to enter the European music player market with the Zune. The Zune media player made its debut in North America last fall, but wasn't met with a tremendous amount of excitement or success. For financial reasons, Microsoft will not be entering the European market just yet.
Speaking to the newspaper Ballmer said, "Bisher verlieren wir in dem Geschäft Geld, weil wir investieren müssen. Daher haben wir uns entschieden, noch nicht in neue Märkte zu gehen. Wann das der Fall sein wird, kann ich heute noch nicht sagen." Roughly translated, Ballmer was saying, "so far we are losing money in the business, because we must invest. Therefore we decided not to get into any new markets just yet. When will that be the case, I can't say today."

iPhone To Debut June 29
06/04/2007 7:02:58 AM CST
The Apple iPhone has finally received its official release date through a commercial which aired during "60 Minutes" yesterday. The ad is now available on the Apple website.
Prior to the announcement, the only hint that was given regarding the highly anticipiated cell phone's launch date was that it would debut in late June. The Apple iPhone is now officially set for release on June 29. The 25 days left up to the iPhone's launch should provide a little more time to save up for the $499 required to buy the 4GB version or the $600 to buy the 8GB version. After the initial price, though, you'll still have to swallow the 2-year AT&T contract. |

Google Acquires GreenBorder
05/29/2007 11:20:10 AM CST

According to ZDNet Google has bought Green Border, a company that specializes in virus protection software and tools. No financial details about the
transaction were revealed.
Although the acquisition might not seem very interesting to the unsuspecting eye as it would only indicate the possibility that Google will integrate virus
protection in its toolbar or come out with its own virus protection software, looking at exactly what Green Border does makes everything a lot more
interesting.
Green Border offers virus protection by isolating each Internet session from the rest of the PC and any earlier Internet sessions. Basically, it offers its
virus protection by keeping all of the files of an Internet session in one place, and after the session is over, deleting everything, including cache,
temporary files, etc. What this method of virus protection does is virtually eliminate the need for updating for protection against new virus signatures. All
files are simply flushed away after each session ends.
Adding this feature into the Google toolbar would have some very interesting effects. Naturally, there would be minor inconveniences such as an erased cache
each time a new Internet session is started, but the Green Border method of security management still offers tempting results.

Microsoft Rolls Out Windows Live Hotmail
05/07/2007 5:16:45 PM CST

Microsoft's Hotmail email service received a faceflift today, marking the first major design change implemented on the email service in over ten years. The new interface of Hotmail is heavily based on Ajax and closely resembles Microsoft Outlook, especially in terms of functionality offering features such as drag-and-drop capabilities and auto-complete addressing. The service has also been re-branded, now called Windows Live Hotmail.
In a move similar to Google and Yahoo, Microsoft has also provided a built-in version of Windows Live Messenger. Microsoft also allows users to VOIP call contacts directly through their web browser. Inbox storage has also been improved, now ringing in at 2GB. We are quite interested to see how Microsoft will respond when Yahoo rolls out its infinite inbox.
For those of us who aren't as easily adjusting, Microsoft also provides an option to revert back to the "classic" Hotmail interface, which has been around since 1996.

MySpace Acquires Photobucket
05/07/2007 4:12:33 PM CST
TechCrunch has confirmed that MySpace and Photobucket were engaging in acquisition discussions for the past few weeks, and that both companies have agreed on an acquisition amount of $250 million for Photobucket. Photobucket has been on the market ever since it hired Lehman Brothers to help sell the company. Although Photobucket generated $6.3 million in revenue, and planned to make $25 million this year, the only serious bidder for the company was social-networking-giant MySpace.
The discussions began a few weeks ago after MySpace began blocking videos from Photobucket. This dispute is expected to have led to serious acquisition discussions, which in turn led to the eventual unblocking of Photobucket videos.

Possible Intel and NVIDIA Agreement
05/07/2007 1:04:17 PM CST
From what we know so far, Intel is believed to be working on its top-secret
"Larabee" project, which is reportedly a high-end discrete graphics card
targeted at gamers, and up until right now, thought to be created completely by
Intel. According to
DigiTimes,
though, NVIDIA might be giving Intel a hand sometime in the near future by
trading its GPU (graphics processor unit) "technology for cooperation with
Intel." Although specific details of the deal were not revealed, and whether the
deal even exists is unknown, DigiTimes quoted various unknown motherboard makers
as saying "Nvidia has had discussions with Intel and has already reached several
agreements." The sources claim that NVIDIA recently met with its partners in
Taiwan to explain its role and plans for the motherboard market. Exactly what
"cooperation" NVIDIA might be looking for and what agreements it reached with
Intel is completely unknown.
