As we said yesterday, Microsoft officially announced their Zune portable media player today. This is the moment Microsoft has been waiting for, and now it’s finally been set into motion. The Zune will allow other Zunes to connect to each other through WiFi and in turn allow the sharing of sample tracks of select songs, personal recordings, playlists and pictures between devices. The Zune will be available in black, brown, or white and come with 30GB of memory, a 3.0" display, WiFi and an FM tuner.
In addition to the launch of the Zune, Microsoft is also introducing the Zune Marketplace. The marketplace will feature the option to buy tracks individually, similar to the iTune approach; however, Microsoft also took a couple of pages from Napters’ book and will also allow an unlimited amount of downloading for a flat fee.
Accessories for the Zune will also be available at launch and will include a car pack, which comes with a car charger and an FM transmitter; a Travel Pack which comes with a bag, premium headphones, remote, synchronization cable, AC adapter; and last the Zune will launch with an A/V Pack that includes a dock, remote, and cables needed to connect the Zune to a TV or sound system. Despite all the announcements, Microsoft still did not release pricing or the final launch date.
