When Tom Stephens, a well-known murder suspect, was arrested on suspicion that he murdered five women in Ipswich, East Anglia, England, journalists were quick to find that he had a MySpace website which revealed a lot of information regarding his personal life.
Stephen’s MySpace became a popular place for journalists to visit as it was a first-hand source to get background information on the man. Stephens had 8 friends in his profile. He also talked about his fondness for Honk Kong Phooey, a cartoon character, and went on to say what school he attended during his childhood.
Going to Stephen’s MySpace now displays an "Invalid Friend ID: This user has either cancelled their membership, or their account has been deleted" message. It is an expected move that MySpace deleted the profile in order to deal with the problem. MySpace's terms of service allow them to do this as it says that they can "terminate . . . access to all or any part of the MySpace Services at any time, for any or no reason, with or without prior notice, and without liability." As one of largest websites on the Internet with a huge user base coming from different countries around the world, it is only expected that the occasional murder suspect or two will pop up on the website.
